I think just about everyone would be familiar with basic granny square patterns but the story does not end there - there are so many different patterns you really are spoiled for choice.
On this page you will find the patterns I have written down from memory or created myself along with information about sourcing other granny square patterns. Some are easy and suitable for beginners and others are a little more complicated, all of them are very effective and most can be made to whatever size you need.

Basic granny squares are easy to make. The crochet skills you will need to know include:
A basic granny square can be pretty much any size you like. You just keep working row after row until it is the size you need. If you are making a blanket you can make a lot of small squares and join them together. (Like the blanket I made – see the image below) or you can just do one giant square.
Another version of a basic granny square is a solid granny square. This version does not have the 'gaps' between groups of three stitches that the basic granny square has. Instead you have a double crochet (us) in every stitch along the edge of your square.
Although this style of granny square is perfect for blankets just as it is, it can also be used as a base for picture squares. These squares have the shape of an animal or character attached to the square.
The crochet skills you will need to know include:
This granny square pattern combines the basic granny square and the solid granny square.
To make this Easy Granny Square you will need to learn how to make a magic ring, and to work a chain stitch and double crochet (US). You can make your granny square as large as you want simply by adding additional rows, following the pattern set in the first five rounds.
