The solid hexagon baby blanket pattern is a good choice if you are looking for something less traditional (i.e., not a square or rectangle). You can make this blanket as large as you desire simply by adding more rounds. My blanket is made by working 55 rounds but you can easily increase the size while still preserving the pattern.

The stitches/techniques you need to master to complete this hexagon granny square include:
Working in rounds. Using a 4.00 mm crochet hook and print 8 ply yarn.
Make a magic ring:
Round 1: ch2 (counts as 1 st), dc 2, *3 ch, dc 3, rep from * four times, 3 ch, sl st into 2nd ch to close. Pull the tail on the magic circle to tighten. At this point, you should have six three-chain loops separated by three dc clusters.
Round 2: 3 ch, 2 dc, * 1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc, in chain space, 1 dc in each dc to next ch sp, rep from * 4 times,sl st into 3rd ch to close.
Round 3: 3 ch, 3 dc, * 1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc, in chain space, 1 dc in each dc to next ch sp, rep from * 4 times, 1 dc, sl st into 3rd ch to close.
Round 4: 3 ch, 3 dc, * 1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc, in chain space, 1 dc in each dc to next ch sp, rep from * 4 times, 1 dc, sl st into 3rd ch to close.
Round 5-10: Continue patt as set, increasing the number of dc by 1 before and after each ch1 space.
Change to white yarn.
Rounds 11-12: Work patt as set.
Change to Contrast yarn.
Round 13: Work patt as set.
Change to Print yarn.
Rounds 14-15: Work patt as set.
Change to White Yarn.
Round 16: Work patt as set.
Change to Print yarn.
Rounds 17-18: Work patt as set.
Change to Contrast yarn.
Rounds 19: Work patt as set.
Repeat rounds 11 to 19 another 4 times.
