Granny Squares

Granny Squares, especially the classic square, are often the crochet project that beginners start with.

This style of crochet is easy to learn, quick to do and very versatile.  Basic granny squares can be pretty much any size you like. You keep working round after round until it is the size you need.  Or if you are making a blanket, you can make smaller squares and join them together. (Like the blanket I made – see the image below).

Or you can keep going and make one giant square.

Granny squares are very versatile and can look striking.  The designs you can select from are extensive and can be sourced very easily online, or once you get a bit more experience, you can start creating your own. Some of the sources I have used include:

and don't forget YouTube and TikTok. The shorter videos can be a little hard to work with, the explanations and demonstrations can be a little fast, but the variety of tutorials available is astounding.

Are you looking for Granny Square Patterns? Many beginners start their learning process by making granny squares. Most granny squares are made flat but in rounds, with each round finishing with a slip stitch into the first stitch of that round.

A simple granny square will start with a magic ring. They will usually have four sides, although it is possible to create pentagons or hexagons using similar processes.

The method you use for joining granny squares will have a significant effect on the look of your finished article. On this page you will find information on some of the choices you have.

For example, you can simply sew the squares together using a knitter's needle, or you can crochet an edge and then crochet the edges of your square together.
