I found this pretty granny square tutorial on Facebook and thought it might be a nice pattern for a blanket, either as one large square or as individual squares joined together. I was looking for something to do as my next crochet project, as I am almost finished with my hexagon baby blankets, and I thought this one was really pretty.
Not only that, but I could use up some of my leftover yarn in my stash!
This video is available on Jonalyn B. Mangunay's Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/1799696283/

The Marvel yarns are available from Spotlight stores, and the Carnival is from BigW. The total cost for the yarn I used for this blanket was minimal as I used leftovers from my stash. But if you were buying it, you would need to buy approximately 6 balls (1 of each colour and 2 white) of yarn at a cost of around $30.00.

I have watched the video, stopping and starting, so that I could write out the instructions for a small square.

Rnd 1: ch 3 to start (acts as the first dc), ch 1, dc, (ch, 1 dc), ch 1 7 times, sl st into 3rd ch and fasten off.

Rnd 2: sc 1 (in same sp), (7 dc in next ch sp, sc in next ch sp) x 3, 7 dc in next ch sp, sl st into first sc. fasten off

Change yarn. Insert the hook into any sc and pull the loop through. Ch 1 to start.
Rnd 3: (ch 4, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc into same stitch), (ch 5, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc into next sc)) x 3, sl st into 3rd starting ch, fasten off.

Change yarn. Insert the hook into the 4th dc of any 7-dc cluster in rnd 2 and pull the loop through. Ch 1 to start.
Rnd 4: sc 1 in same stitch, 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc in 2 ch sp, 7 dc in 1 ch sp, (sc 1 into the 4th dc, 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc in 2 ch sp, 7 dc in 1 ch sp) x 3, sl sp into 1st sc, fasten off.

Rnd 5: (ch 4, dc), (ch 5, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc into next sc), ch 5, dc, ch 1, dc)) x 3, ch 5, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc into next sc) sl st into 3rd starting ch, fasten off.

Change yarn. Insert the hook into the 4th dc of any 7-dc cluster in rnd 4 and pull the loop through. Ch 1 to start.
Rnd 6: (1st side) sc 1 in same stitch, 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc into 4th dc in next 7 dc in rnd 5, *(1st cnr) 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc in 2 ch sp, 7 dc in 1 ch sp, (2nd side) sc 1 into the 4th dc, 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc in 2 ch sp, 7 dc in 1 ch sp, rep from * another 2 times, 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc in 2 ch sp, 7 dc in 1 ch sp, sl sp into 1st sc, fasten off.
This is where Jonalyn's tutorial finishes (at round 6). But you can keep going if you want to repeat the same pattern.
Corners - odd rounds: dc, ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc into next sc at corner, 5 ch.
Corners - even rounds: 7 dc in 1 ch space, sc in 2 ch sp, 7 dc in 1 ch sp
Sides - odd rounds: join yarn in 1st sc after the corner in the previous round.
(3 ch (first side) or dc (in subsequent sides), ch 1, dc) in same st, ch 5, *(dc, ch 1, dc) into next sc, ch 5 rep from * until you reach the next corner.
Sides - even rounds: join yarn into the 7-dc cluster in the previous even rnd and pull the loop through. Make 1 ch to start.
*sc 1 into the 4th dc of the previous even round, 7 dc in the next 1 ch space, rep until you reach the last 7 dc cluster before the corner, sc 1 in the 4th dc.
